How to use the planner and general FAQs
Orientation is a mix of online and in-person activities for students commencing at the University of Sydney in Semester 1, 2021. To create an account and register for events, you'll need your student details, including your University email address, SID number, degree and major (your University student email account is provided to you when you enrol). Make sure you double check all your details before submitting. You'll be sent an email to verify your account – make sure to check your junk folder if you can’t see it.
Once you've registered for your Faculty events and events specific to your student status (for instance, welcome events for international students, exchange students, pathway students, etc) browse the rest of the program for more events of interest to add to your schedule.
If you have any issues creating your account, please email us.
For some events, we really need to know if you’re coming. Double check your schedule beforehand and let us know if you can or cannot make it along to your events. Knowing numbers in advance is important so we can prepare an ideal experience for everyone.
If you reset your account after registering for some events, make sure to re-register your attendance. Some events may require you to register externally outside the planner. If you’re not sure or are having problems adding an event to your schedule, email the staff contact listed for the event.
Orientation is about becoming familiar with University and the people you’ll be studying with. Don’t overload your schedule with too many similar events – make sure you balance out information sessions and workshops with some social activities. If there’s a clash, always go to your faculty session – you'll have lots of opportunities to make friends, but missing out on some key course information could come back to haunt you later!
The checklist helps you get some of the most important tasks done before semester begins. It also directs you to more vital information that might not be fully covered during Orientation. Check them all off before the end of the week and you’ll be in great shape for the start of the semester.
Build your schedule around your Faculty and welcome events. There are filters for faculty, student type and topics that will help you find events that are relevant to your needs. As you plan your week, keep checking to make sure you don’t create clashes, and know how and where to login for each event.
We’ll inform you by notification if there are changes to events throughout Orientation.
If you experience any difficulties signing up or experience any technical issues with the planner email us with a description of your problem and any accompanying screenshots.
Orientation is a huge program of online and in-person events and activities held before the start of semester that cover aspects of university life. It is your big welcome to the University of Sydney, where you’ll be introduced to your faculty, your course and your fellow students.
If you miss Orientation, you'll find yourself playing catch-up for the rest of the semester. Our welcome programs are specifically designed to prepare you for success. If you are busy with other commitments, we highly recommend you at least try to get online for your faculty’s welcome events.
If you can’t make it, make sure you read all the information sent to your University email account, read up on our information for new students and make sure you have completed everything that is required before classes. Some events will be recorded so you can catch up after.
For most events, you'll need to register in the planner – this will add it to your schedule and let the event organiser know you're coming. Some particular events may require you to register externally outside the planner. If you’re not sure or are having problems registering for an event, email the staff contact listed for the event.
Most events take place between Monday 2 and Friday 6 August, but a number of activities are held outside of this week, usually in the week before and after. Check the program early and plan accordingly.
